March 7th, 2009 was the setting for Rancho Palos Verdes' Whale of a Day Festival. The US Coast Guard and the USCG Auxiliary presented displays of boats, equipment, helicopters and information booths at Point Vicente Lighthouse. Also on hand were members of the US Naval Sea Cadets and Navy Leaguers to help with crowd control. Over 5,000 visitors toured the lighthouse and exhibits.

Since the first "Whale day" open house back in 1992, Keeper Eric Castrobran(flotilla3-5) has welcomed over
350,000 guests
